Notice What You
Notice
Eriogonum cinereum; Baileya multiradiata; Salvia apiana. California Native Plants from my garden |
How many times have
you arrived at a destination and thought,
“how did I even get
here?”
“Noticing how things are at the beginning, as
we start the practice…
If one does not take time to notice the order,
the structure, the essence and beauty at the beginning, how will one be able
to rearrange all the aspects of the structure if something disrupts the harmony
while journeying away from the first step…”

I Have a Reputation
I have been called demanding.
I have been called picky.
I have been called picky.
Many say I have a keen eye.
Some have said “It’s like you have eyes in the
back of your head!”
I’ve been told “you see everything!”
I have heard many variations of “you have helped
me notice things about my body, my habits, and how I move, that I had never
noticed…it has made such a difference…thank you…”
Perspective. Practice. Purpose.
“Slow Down… Pause… Breathe… Smile… Notice
what you notice…”
“Take your time…no rush…”
“Did you read the board outside…then why are
you grabbing your mat while carrying all your personal belongings?”
“Did you notice how the blankets were folded
before class started…now look at how you put yours back…”
“How did you put your pen back in the holder? Did you put the cap back on? Did you just throw it in? Did you even notice how they were arranged before you grabbed one?”
“How did you put your pen back in the holder? Did you put the cap back on? Did you just throw it in? Did you even notice how they were arranged before you grabbed one?”

Some Find it to be Tiresome (in the beginning)
“Seriously?”
“Does it matter?”
“I didn’t want to make more than one trip.”
“Why are you so picky?”
“I didn’t want to make more than one trip.”
“Why are you so picky?”
“I do this all the time”
“Why are you so demanding?”
“Does it really matter how we fold the
blankets?”
“Do you really care how we put the pens back in the holder?”
“Do you really care how we put the pens back in the holder?”

By Week Six, Many Appreciate the Permission to Slow Down
“I've really started taking my time”
“How is it that I have more time, now that
I've slowed down?”
“I haven't hurt myself loading and unloading groceries in weeks.”
“I haven't hurt myself loading and unloading groceries in weeks.”
"I catch myself hearing your voice
reminding me to 'notice the quality of your movement."
"When my back hurts I remember to notice
what I have been doing all day, the day before, and even throughout the week,
and make adjustments in my posture or activities if needed...thanks for the
reminders."
"It's funny how I can hear your voice
saying, 'maintain your dignity' and 'notice your breath," as I complete a
hard physical task."

An Ever-Evolving Process and Practice
My years of dance training, with mentors with
eagle eyes, honed my observation skills. As did my love of exploring and
studying so many other mindful movement modalities.
My passion for lifelong learning and observing myself and others, and how we see, feel, and process
cues and experiences, allows me to work collaboratively with my clients,
students, and colleagues.
I absolutely love what I
am privileged to do every day: inviting others to slow down, pause,
breathe, smile, and notice...to appreciate all that they are, and all that they
do, just as I do my best to walk my talk.
